8 Types of Espresso Explained

You walk into a coffee shop; maybe it’s your first visit, or maybe it’s your 20th. Either way, each coffee shop has a different vibe and each shop has a different menu. Although different, most coffeeshops will offer generally the same few drinks, with many variations. Perfecting espresso shots is another crucial step in the perfect-tasting beverage, but we will get into that another day. Today, I’ll be explaining eight different types of common espresso beverages that way you will feel confident in your next coffee purchase.
Espresso
The espresso shot is the most important step to any espresso based drink; it is the foundation. It can also be referred to as: “short black” or “single shot” depending on where you’re buying.
Doppio
Doppio derives from the Italian language and means literally: “double.” Therefore, when you order a doppio/doppio espresso, you’re asking for a double shot of espresso.
Machiato
The typical macchiato comes with either a single or double shot of espresso, topped with a dot or small dollop of foamed milk. If you like the flavor of espresso but want a touch of something sweet, a machiato can be your comfort.
Cortado
Personally, when I need a quick pick-me-up, this is my favorite espresso drink to order. A single shot cortado consists of one shot of espresso with equal parts steamed milk. Likewise, a double cortado is made up of two shots of espresso and two shots steamed milk. For a sweeter sip, try adding caramel.
Americano
If you enjoy the taste of espresso or the darker coffee, but don’t enjoy how quickly you drink espresso, the Americano may be the choice for you. Depending on the coffee shop, their Americanos may come with a different amount of espresso shots. Ask before you order; you may need to add extra shots to your liking. Essentially, an Americano is 2 shots espresso with 6-12 ounces of hot water.
Latte
Latte gets its name from the amount of steamed milk. A latte includes espresso, steamed milk and a dollop of foam, sometimes with whipped cream on top. There are variations of this beverage, as you can add a multitude of flavors so it’s the perfect taste to your liking.
Cappuccino
Although you may find yourself ordering a latte and a cappuccino interchangeably, they are not the same beverage. A cappuccino follows the rule of thirds and essentially includes a 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk and 1/3 foamed milk. Like a latte, flavored syrups can be added to alter the sweetness of your drink.
Mocha
A mocha is the chocolate lover’s dream drink. A mocha is made up of chocolate syrup, espresso, steamed milk and generally whipped cream on top. If you’re looking for something sweet or aren’t yet keen on the flavor of espresso, a mocha is a good choice.
Espresso is one of the most common beverages to order in a coffee shop, but knowing it’s variations will help you order exactly what you want. After reading this article, maybe you’re inclined to try something new the next time you order, or perhaps a different variation of the drink you normally get. Either way, now you know a little bit more about the beverages you’re ordering. Look forward to the next blog about other types of beverages you’ll find in a coffee shop!
